Kings College Hospital, London – Temporary Works

Kings College Hospital, London Kings College Hospital, London

Description

Working with the Main Contractor as their Temporary Works Designer we undertook designs and design checks on numerous complex and bespoke aspects of temporary works to enable the £50M hospital expansion project to be constructed. The project involves the construction of a Helipad platform on top of the existing ten storey building and a new three storey Critical Care Unit constructed over the top of an existing live theatre block. Due to the proximity to live railway lines we worked closely with Network Rail seeking their approval on any works close to their assets.

Temporary Works designs involved: contiguous piled wall propping, tower crane bases, steel gantry for accommodation and welfare cabins, CAT 3 checks on scaffolding designs and multiple propping systems to enable the day to day actives to continue. Working with the Contractor we presented an alternative piled foundation solution instead of traditional mass fill foundations which not only greatly reduced the health and safety risks of working in a restricted courtyard space with deep excavations but also allowed the full potential of the project to be realised with the increased loading potential.
