Improving Safety, Efficiency and Quality

Temporary works can cover a wide range of activities, from simple fencing off of sites through to large scale temporary bracing or propping of structures under construction.

Consideration should be given to the requirement for temporary works from the outset of a project. There is increasing recognition that an experienced and knowledgeable Temporary Works Designer can improve safety, efficiency and quality of a project while helping to avoid undue costs and delays.

Working with main contractors as their temporary works designer, we have undertaken designs and design checks on numerous complex and bespoke aspects on several projects including a £50m hospital expansion. The project involved the construction of a helipad platform on top of the existing ten storey building, and a new three storey critical care unit constructed over the top of an existing live theatre block. Due to the proximity to live railway lines, we worked closely with Network Rail – seeking their approval on any works close to their assets.

Working with the contractor we presented an alternative piled foundation solution instead of traditional mass fill foundations which not only greatly reduced the health and safety risks of working in a restricted courtyard space with deep excavations, but also allowed the full potential of the project to be realised with the increased loading potential.
